New challenges are reshaping today the oil&gas industry environment: shale gas, deep water and
arctic exploration, liquefed natural gas, better exploitation of mature felds and a greater attention to
capital effciency.
In order to understand which are the viable opportunities for the Italian oil&gas value chain (Enginee-
ring, Contracting, Components, Services) in this complex competitive arena, this article analyses the
main trends for oil&gas sector and highlights the specifc characteristics of each of the new challen-
ges, to underline how they ft with the features of the Italian industry.
Italian players willing to take advantage of this circumstances need to understand how the envi-
ronment is changing and then identify and manage the enablers that would allow them to transform
some of these challenges into opportunities.
