tribuire a dar forma al settore tramite le loro azioni
come project owner.
Da ultimo, il ruolo della pubblica amministrazione
sarà assolutamente cruciale nel suo ruolo di project
owner, come in quello di policy maker, spingendo
la competizione (per esempio, semplificando e ar-
monizzando codici e standard), garantendo tempi-
stiche ragionevoli per le attività di ottenimento dei
permessi e, infine, supportando gli investimenti in
ricerca e sviluppo.

The future of E&C and the impact of Industry 4.0

The economy, as well as the environment and the society as a whole, are heavily affected by the Engineering & Construction
industry (E&C), since the built environment is capable of dramatically influencing people’s quality of life. E&C accounts for
6% of global GDP, and for some 25-40% of the global carbon emissions: since the number of inhabitants of urban areas is
increasing by 200.000 units per day, E&C’s impact, both positive and negative, is projected to increase over the next years.
A bold and appropriate response from the industry is necessary. So far, technological development has been slow, no major
disruptive changes have been implemented. It’s high time, for the industry, to undergo those changes.
The report Shaping the Future of Costruction. A Breakthrough in Mindset and Technology, prepared by the World Economic
Forum in collaboration with The Boston Consulting Group, lists 30 possible measures, that can be adopted by companies or
by governments, and that can help the industry to achieve better efficiency and sustainable support to the development of
the global economy.
