An interview with Prof. Sergio Cavalieri, President, AIDI – Italian Association of
Teachers of Industrial Plants Full Professor at the Department of Management,
Information and Production Engineering at University of Bergamo

The Italian Engineering & Construction industry has been one of the pillars of our industrial system, an important reference point and
source of pride for students and young professionals. However, due to the economic crisis and increasing market complexity, the linkage
between industry and academic worlds has been loosened over the last decade. We need to recover and re-strengthen this link.
Most importantly, research activities at universities in collaboration with the industrial world need vision, farsightedness, perseverance,
continuity in long-term relationships.
Lifelong learning is one of the most important areas of possibly stronger cooperation between industry and academia: it is of utmost
importance to continuously re-qualify and re-train professionals and operators, to enable the workforce to face the challenges of the future
– but we need to look into the future with a long-term vision.
In order to be more competitive, we need to operate more as an ‘innovationeco-system’, with focus on specific and tangible steps,
emphasizing long-term continuity. A national industrial policy is stronglyrequired, along the lines not only of Germany but also of China,
who is sticking with an impressive discipline on the path of the latest ‘Five years industrial plan’. A particular insight should be done on
SMEs which terribly need the support of Universities for leveraging on a critical R&D mass for developing innovative projects.
Summing up, in order to exploit the opportunities offered by recent breakthroughs in technology development, foremost in digitalization,
we need long-term vision and enhanced collaboration between industry and academia: there are already some available mechanisms
as, for example, industrial doctorates, which foresee the co-location of PhD students in industrial sites as well as university labs, and the
training internships of graduate and undergraduate students in the last year of their academic studies.
